Artist Statement: The Geometry of Balance and Conflict
My work is an exploration of the fundamental principles of balance, tension, and kinetic potential through the lens of geometric abstraction. I use the language of steel and mixed media—materials often associated with industry and construction—to create sculptures that are simultaneously rigid and dynamic. The inherent weight and permanence of metal are subverted by precarious arrangements, sharp angles, and gravity-defying forms, suggesting that even the most solid structures are held in a momentary, energetic equilibrium.
Form and Composition
The compositions are built from a vocabulary of simplified, angular forms: cones, prisms, cuboids, and sweeping curves. These elements are stacked, intersected, and balanced to achieve a sense of active instability that demands the viewer's attention. The silhouette is paramount; each piece is designed to cast a dramatic, complex shadow that serves as an essential, ephemeral extension of the three-dimensional form itself.
Color and Emotion
Color is used not merely for decoration, but as a defining structural and emotional force. High-contrast, saturated colors like bold reds, intense blues, bright yellows, and stark blacks are employed to differentiate segments, emphasize points of contact, and heighten the drama of the overall structure. Whether through single-color fields or expressive, distressed-looking patterns, the palette intensifies the conflict and dialogue between the joined and opposing masses.
My goal is to capture a feeling of resolved paradox—a visual moment where potential energy, whether of collapse or ascension, is perfectly suspended, inviting the viewer to contemplate the forces and relationships that hold the modern world together.
